Beck – The Information: #717 of best 1,000 albums ever!

Beck - The Information

Why is Beck’s The Information on my best 1,000 albums ever list?

Think I’m in love… with The Information.

What does Beck’s The Information mean to me? What does it make me feel? Why is it exciting or compelling?

The Information is a challenging album to get a read on as a whole. But it’s one of those journeys that’s more rewarding for the work you put into it.

“I Think I’m In Love” falls out of that pattern as it’s immediately accessible, catchy, lovely, and compelling all it once. And it’s a song that can easily stay in my head for weeks and I never quite mind.

That music video is ridiculous and amazing, as aside.

“Cellphone’s Dead” is funky, strange, electronic, and filled with oddball samples all at once. It grows on you.

It took me some time to get on the right frequency with “1000BPM” but once it clicked I was all about it.

Electronic eye vision, astromagnetic
Corrupted files from galactical planets

Oh indeed.

See what I wrote above again re: ridiculous and amazing music video. More can and often should be done with less, and Beck’s an absolute master of the form.

Pop culture stuff that’s somehow related to Beck’s The Information

The CD version of the album cover for The Information (and perhaps the vinyl version as well for all I know) notably included little stickers that allowed you to essentially design your own album art. It’s very much in line with Beck’s aesthetic of creating musical collages that both lightly satirize and honor various musical genres at the same time.

But I also recall thinking that it represented a transition in some ways to music in the digital format: to be downloaded and organized via digital platforms and played via digital music players (and, shortly thereafter, smart phones). And that, too, ties back to themes that The Information touches on with regard to information overload and the myriad consequences it has for individuals and society. Quite prophetic, really.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?

Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.

But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective review of what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style.
