Le Butcherettes – Don’t Bleed: #256 of best 1,000 albums ever!

Le Butcherettes - Don't Bleed

So why is Le Butcherettes’ Don’t Bleed on this best 1,000 albums ever thing?

ObserWatching Le Butcherettes evolve over the years has been fascinating. I find myself loving each incarnation, and over time I’ve come to realize that they’ve easily become one of my most favorite current bands.

With Don’t Bleed – an exceptional seven song collection that skirts the line between EP and short full length album at seven-songs that runs just under 20 minutes – it’s easily the “mellowest” Le Butcherettes album to date, but it’s no less compelling than the band’s most raw and raucous punk rock albums.

By “mellowest,” I mean that on songs like “Out For You,” there’s a wonderful synth-y and pop element at play that’s deeply compelling and intriguing. But it’s also still plenty driving and rocking at the same time, all the stuff you look for in a Le Butcherettes track.

And then “Don’t Bleed, You’re in the Middle of the Forest” has as much in common with Thievery Corporation as with the ferocious punk rock and experimental art rock influences that are in the band’s DNA. Most importantly: it’s super good and completely works.

“Tunisia” is an upbeat dance track with some techno influences and I can’t believe I’m writing those words about a Le Butcherettes song, frankly! But again: it’s great! In fact, the more I listen to it, it’s becoming my favorite song on Don’t Bleed.

Overall, the way Don’t Bleed expands into new musical realms while still keeping the band’s core vibe intact is seriously impressive.

Won’t admit you’ve lived this long riding on a useless train of thought.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?

Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.

But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective review of what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style.
