Why is Icona Pop’s This Is… Icona Pop on my best 1,000 albums ever list?

Loud, brash, insanely catchy, and fun as hell. What’s not to like?

What does Icona Pop’s This Is… Icona Pop mean to me? What does it make me feel? Why is it exciting or compelling?

“I Love It,” featuring Charli XCX, with its iconic chorus (I don’t care… I love it!) is loud, brash, insanely catchy, and fun as hell. What’s more, the beat is spot on.

This Is… Icona Pop overall offers up more of the same. This is not cerebral sip on brandy and stare out at a wintry hellscape while contemplating humanity whilst in a state of existential ennui music. No! This is fun, loopy, throw it on and dance around like an idiot music. It dares… nay, compels you to do so!

“Ready for the Weekend” sounds like it could have been inspired by outstanding French house and electronica outfit Justice, and not surprisingly will get you amped and fully prepared for the part of the week that starts after work on Friday.

“On a Roll” is wild pop fun with a fantastic EDM hook.

“I Love It” was used as the opening theme song to MTV’s Jersey Shore spin-off – or should I say one of Jersey Shore’s spin-offs – called Snooki & JWoww, which not surprisingly followed the continuing adventures of Jersey Shore cast members Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jenni “JWoww” Farley.

If you’re asking: yes, I’m an enormous fan of Jersey Shore. Yes, I’ve watched a good bit of Snooki & JWoww. It’s decent, but not nearly as good as other spin-offs, and particularly the current Double Shot at Love series featuring Paul “DJ Pauly D” DelVecchio and Vinnie “The Keto Guido” Guadagnino.

The current iteration of Jersey Shore Family Vacation can be quite good, though the current gang is (mostly) settled and together enough that the drama can feel extra manufactured and over engineered at times. I will point out though without a bit of irony that Mike “The Situation” (and, these days, “Big Daddy Sitch” a.k.a. “BDS”) Sorrentino’s redemption story is one of the more compelling and inspiring things I’ve seen on television in recent years.
