So why is Cracker’s Kerosene Hat on this best 1,000 albums ever thing?
Kerosene Hat is the classic example of an album that yielded one pretty massive hit in the early 1990s (“Low”) but is surprisingly strong overall and, all things considered, there are arguably a handful of songs that are even better than the hit single.
And while I’ve already called it a strong record, ‘Low’ more than earns its fame – an MTV-ready alt-rock anthem with a great chorus, raucous guitars, and gritty-but-pleasing vocals
“Sick of Goodbyes” shows off the album’s range – a well-crafted bar-band gem mixing alt-rock with just enough country-rock twang to give it unique flavor.
“Movie Star” is a fun boot stomping rock song with great energy and powerful alt rock guitar riffs.
And “Lonesome Johnny Blues” leans into the band’s country rock repertoire, and quite successfully at that, with fine guitar finger picking and catchy lyrics.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?
Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.
But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective take on what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style.
