Why is Cracker’s Kerosene Hat on my best 1,000 albums ever list?
They keep it low, they keep it hot, they keep heads covered.
What does Cracker’s Kerosene Hat mean to me? What does it make me feel? Why is it exciting or compelling?
Cracker’s Kerosene Hat is the classic example of an album that yielded one pretty massive hit in the early 1990s (“Low”) but is surprisingly strong overall and, all things considered, there are arguably a handful of songs that are even better than the hit single.
But as I just stated, Kerosene Hat is a surprisingly strong record and as part of that “Low” is plenty well good in its own right, a radio and MTV ready alternative rock song with a memorable chorus and good mix of raucous guitars and gritty yet pleasing vocals.
“Sick of Goodbyes” is an example of the variety you get with Kerosene Hat, a well put together and executed bar band entry with a nice mix of alterative rock and just enough of a country rock twinge to give it a nicely unique flavor.
“Movie Star” is a fun boot stomping rock song with great energy and powerful alt rock guitar riffs.
And “Lonesome Johnny Blues” is leans into the band’s country rock repertoire, and quite successfully at that, with fine guitar finger picking and catchy lyrics.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?
Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.
But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective take on what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style.
