Why is Le Butcherettes’ Cry Is for the Flies on my best 1,000 albums ever list?
Wildly and gloriously weird punk-y art-meets-garage rock. Just dig it.
What does Le Butcherettes’ Cry Is for the Flies mean to me? What does it make me feel? Why is it exciting or compelling?
I can’t quite recall how I stumbled across Le Butcherettes, but I knew I liked them a lot right away. I know the exact song though, which remains an absolute favorite: “Kiss & Kill,” off the album from 2008 of the same name. It’s gloriously garage-y, catchy, punk, and melodic all at once.
Over time, I came to realize that Le Butcherettes produce a wide range of musical output. They are a band who rarely play it safe, and so not everything totally works – at least in my completely subjective view. But the stuff that works really works and, in the increasingly outdated parlance of baseball analogies, their batting average is impressively high.
Fantastic example: when jotting down notes for Cry Is for the Flies, I wrote: “Poet from Nowhere” is wildly weird and I really like it. And man, is it! Dig it. I’ve written about many hundreds of songs across the first 180+ entries published on this here best 1,000 albums ever project, and I’m not sure I can describe it better than that! Well, I’ll meekly try by relaying that it has great (weird) energy, vocals, and (weird?) organs.
I could write the same things about “Crying Out to the Flies” (a song title that completely makes sense as part of an album called Cry Is for the Flies, right?) except throw the word mournful in front of every noun. Wonderfully mournful it is.
“Demon Stuck in Your Eye” has that raw punk-y art-meets-garage rock vibe that first attracted me to Le Butcherettes, and it adds some wild White Stripes-esque flourishes as well. It doth rock.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?
Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.
But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective take on what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style.
