Kacey Musgraves – Golden Hour: #796 of best 1,000 albums ever!

Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour

Why is Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour on my best 1,000 albums ever list?

Here’s how I’ll describe it: it’s just flipping gorgeous.

What does Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour mean to me? What does it make me feel? Why is it exciting or compelling?

Golden Hour is not the kind of album I would normally gravitate to without having heard it first, what Rolling Stone describes as a mix of “Sade and Dolly Parton.” And for a completely different angle, All Music describes Golden Hour as follows:

Golden Hour shimmers with the vivid colors that arrive when the sun starts to set, when familiar scenes achieve a sense of hyperreality.

What I do know is that when I throw on songs like “Butterflies,” it’s just flipping gorgeous. Yep, that’s my term for it: flipping gorgeous. Even though the “butterflies” are emotional and not physical, the mood and effervescent spirit of the song are perfectly matched with the slow but sure emergence of spring here in Seattle as of this writing.

“Velvet Elvis” is a perfect mesh of pop, country, and rock, with Musgraves’ velvety voice the cherry on top. I also like the concept that someone can leverage a “velvet Elvis” as a love song or tribute of some kind.

“Lonely Weekend” leans a little more into Musgraves’ pop sensibilities. There’s just something so compelling and inherently positive or hopeful about Musgraves’ voice that I’m happy hanging with whatever style she chooses to emphasize.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?

Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.

But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective review of what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style.
