So why is Blues Traveler’s Four on this best 1,000 albums ever thing?
Four is the kind of album I wasn’t sure would hold up. I hadn’t really revisited it until the deep dive that this here best 1,000 albums ever project required, and I half expected it to feel dated.
I was happily surprised that it does not.
In fact, Four sounds fresh and vibrant, John Popper’s big voice booming (popping?) and crooning, his harmonica skills on fine display, and the tight blues rock outfit behind him cranking out a consistently fun, energetic, and upbeat set of songs.
Four’s two big hits – “Run-Around” and “Hook” – show off Blues Traveler’s range wonderfully. “Run-Around” is endlessly catchy, upbeat, sing-along-able, a pure good time blues jam. “Hook” is a top-notch… well, hook, and shows off a more soulful, yearning side to Popper and the band. John Popper’s vocals are pretty amazing here as well.
“Stand” is a pretty good… well, stand in (man, Blues Traveler keeps doing this to me!) for the consistent quality and rocking blues jam vibes that roll throughout Four.
