Why is Urge Overkill’s Saturation on my best 1,000 albums ever list?
I have Quentin Tarantino to thank plenty of things, with introducing me to Urge Overkill among them. Their cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” is not only a killer track in its own right — it’s welded forever to one of the most endlessly cool, stylish moments in Pulp Fiction (yes, the Mia Wallace I really hope it’s not going there… scene).
Between that and “Sister Havana,” which got a healthy amount of early-’90s radio play, I made sure to grab Saturation on CD as soon as I could get my hot hands on it. From the jump, I knew it was rock solid: no duds, a unified sound, and a rare mix of swagger and self-awareness. Saturation is cool without being slick, rocking without turning to sludge, and packed with hooks, confident vocals, and razor-sharp guitar work.
The “Sister Havana” video alone is worth your time — partly for the song’s sunny crunch, partly for the comically oversized amulet that feels like a deliberate, ironic fashion flourish. Irony turns up another notch on “Erica Kane,” a jangly homage to Susan Lucci’s soap opera character from All My Children. The band mourns Lucci’s many Emmy nominations without a win, turning daytime TV trivia into rock ’n’ roll drama.
“Nite and Grey” is a straight-ahead rocker, lean and no-nonsense. “Positive Bleeding” struts in with jagged guitar and swagger to burn, while deep cut “Back on Me” slides a little glam polish over the band’s alt-rock heart. Producer Butch Vig (fresh off Nevermind fame) gives the whole record a big, gleaming frame without sanding off its edges — the perfect balance for a band with a built-in smirk.

Come around to my way of thinkin’.
What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?
Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.
But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective review of what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style.
