Wolfmother – Wolfmother: #672 of best 1,000 albums ever!

Wolfmother - Wolfmother

Why is Wolfmother on my best 1,000 albums ever list?

You see right through me – I got the feeling of love.

What does Wolfmother mean to me? What does it make me feel? Why is it exciting or compelling?

“Woman” is flat out and easily one of the best metal songs of this century. It is an absolutely crushing and exhilarating sonic hurricane imbued with ingredients created by heavy metal godfathers such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath and then sped up so as to become some kind supernatural force of musical might.

Which is to say, it’s good. Very effective video, too. Simple yet frantically-paced and interesting.

“Joker and The Thief” clearly has a heavy White Stripes influence, brought up to heavy metal arena rock levels. There’s also a prog rock arpeggiated organ thing going on as well.

“Vagabond” slows and quiets things down quite a bit, going a little bit for a Led Zeppelin mystic rock vibe, with some Who influence as well.

Pop culture stuff that’s somehow related to Wolfmother

In my memory, I thought that “Woman” was featured in the first edition of The Hangover trilogy (if it can be called such) but it’s actually “Joker & The Thief” that’s used in that first film from 2009. Both “Woman” and “Love Train” are used in the sequel from 2011, however.

I might be semi-making up this part as well but I believe that “Woman” was used for The Hangover Part II trailer, which overall was by far the highest quality thing to be put out by The Hangover franchise after the first movie hit huge.

The first Hangover movie is, of course, hilarious though not a movie that I’m looking to revisit anytime soon, whereas I’d be delighted to watch other 2000s comedies such as Wedding Crashers, Old School, Zoolander, and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy any old time.

Speaking of amazing uses of metal songs in 2000s-era comedies, by far my favorite is the use of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” in Old School. I’ve watched this move about 50 times, and in re-watching it just now I observed how great the editing is, which heightens the excitement and hilarity.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?

Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.

But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective review of what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style.
