So why is The Donnas’ Spend the Night on this best 1,000 albums ever thing?
I’m a sucker for upbeat, aggressive yet melodic, hook-driven pop punk I’m a sucker for upbeat, aggressive yet melodic, hook-driven pop punk fronted by female vocalists. How’s that for super specific?
The Donnas excel at just this, with an overall attitude that channels influences from bands ranging from the Ramones, The Runaways, and L7.
“Take It Off,” the hit song off Spend the Night, shows off all of these qualities. In addition to big, its meaty hooks and singalong chorus are custom made to blast out of your first car’s dashboard.
“I Don’t Care (So There)” is a perfect example of The Donnas updating 1970s guitar rock with a pop punk sound for a new generation. Which is all to say that it’s catchy, fun, and just great.
If the vocals were stripped away from “It’s On the Rocks,” you might think it’s an AC/DC song. That said, I prefer Brett Anderson of The Donnas around 1,000 times more than anything AC/DC could pull off*.
* Sorry to bag on AC/DC here, but I’m just not a fan of their vocals at all. So, tiny spoiler that you will not find any AC/DC albums on the best 1,000 albums ever.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?
Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.
But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective review of what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style.
