So why is Method Man & Redman’s Blackout! 2 on this best 1,000 albums ever thing?
The first edition of Blackout! is very good, but the sequel, simply titled 2 (or Vol. 2), proves that the pairing of Redman and Wu-Tang alum Method Man is an all-timer (see more on the fellas below).
Speaking of all-timers, from the first time I listened to “Dis Iz 4 All My Smokers,” I knew we had a hip hop pot anthem on our hands. Pardon the phrase, but the DJ Scratch track on this one is absolutely smoking, a loop built on a wild flourish of strings that culminates with the eminently chant-alongable song title*.
* Yes, this is a song where you know precisely what it’s about from the song title alone.
Saukrates joins the boys on “A-YO,” where a subtle funk guitar riff and nicely layered horn samples help get the party popping.
And speaking of anthems, a slow-and-low bass keyboard hook sets off “City Lights,” a track where Bun B joins in on the fun.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?
Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.
But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective review of what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style. Find out more about why I embarked on a best 1,000 albums ever project.
