Eagles of Death Metal – Peace Love Death Metal: #261 of best 1,000 albums ever!

Eagles of Death Metal - Peace Love Death Metal

So why is Eagles of Death Metal’s Peace Love Death Metal on this best 1,000 albums ever thing?

While not really a “comedy” musical act in the vein of Tenacious D or Flight of the Conchords, Eagles of Death Metal is a band that doesn’t take itself overly seriously except when it comes to fully rocking out.

And that they do, exceptionally well.

It’s no surprise when you consider that the band includes Josh Homme, who is also an alumnus of Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss.

Eagles of Death Metal is mostly more laid back than Homme’s other projects; in fitting with the band name, there’s a mix of SoCal flavored chill rock with more hard rock/metal-y elements.

I absolutely love the songs on Peace Love Death Metal that lean into the chill side (much more than even the Eagles’ own best material, frankly) such as “San Berdoo Sunburn” and the semi-unfortunately named “Whorehoppin’ (Shit, Goddam).”

“Stuck in the Metal” is a super fun cover of “Stuck in the Middle With You, by Stealers Wheel.”*

* This one is yet another dusted off classic immortalized in a Quentin Tarantino flick – Reservoir Dogs in this case.

“Midnight Creeper” journeys into flat-out country rock territory, and it’s precisely the kind of country rock that hits my sweet spot.

And “Bad Dream Mama” is a high-pitched vocal track that shows off the band’s more death metal-y (though I’d really call it more like life metal?) side.

Pop culture stuff that has something to do with Eagles of Death Metal’s Peace Love Death Metal

I mentioned Queens of the Stone Age above. With a lot of their material, I find that I respect it more than really dig it as far as my own particular musical proclivities go.

However.

I became completely obsessed with “The Evil Has Landed” when it came out in 2017, and still love it deeply to this day. This is incredible hard rock with a guitar hook that rivals the best that Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, or The Who have ever produced.

Other stuff that’s somehow related to Eagles of Death Metal’s Peace Love Death Metal

If you’ve kind of heard of Eagles of Death Metal but can’t recall from where, the band figured prominently in a horrific and tragic event from 2015. From Wikipedia:

On November 13, 2015, Eagles of Death Metal were playing a sold-out concert to about 1,500 guests at the Bataclan theatre in Paris. The band had started performing the song “Kiss the Devil” when Islamist terrorists killed about 90 fans.[17][18] According to reports, the terrorists shot indiscriminately into the crowd, including those seeking cover by lying on the floor, and then detonated explosive vests when the theatre was stormed by special police units. Hughes escaped via the backstage,[19] along with guitarist Eden Galindo and drummer Julian Dorio, while bassist Matt McJunkins, who was on the other side of the stage, ran backstage and sought shelter in a dressing room with some fans. Guitarist Dave Catching retreated to a small bathroom and was later evacuated along with McJunkins by French police.[20] Among those killed in the attack was 36 year old Nick Alexander, who worked at the band’s merchandise table during the group’s European tour.[21]

You’re always saying, it’s so easy.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?

Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.

But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective review of what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style. Find out more about why I embarked on a best 1,000 albums ever project.
