The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live tries to put Rick and Michonne back together again

The Walking Dead - The Ones Who Live

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live is a new spin-off show of the long running The Walking Dead. What’s it about?

Well, it’s a comedy of manners set in the glorious English countryside circa…

Uh, okay no, that’s not really it. If it’s got The Walking Dead in the title, we’re of course talking about post-apocalyptic zombies who are (somehow?) still hungry and what the surviving humans left around do to survive.

The Ones Who Live trailer looks very much like more of The Walking Dead, with some wrinkles thrown in with regard to urban environments and a potentially creepy and/or sinister paramilitary-type army of some sort thrown in. And the main plot looks to be about longtime TWD cast members Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) trying to find one another.

The “original” Walking Dead series ran for 11 seasons and a whopping 177 episodes. I probably watched up through… like Season 7 or 8, I want to say, but I honestly lost count and mostly was watching with a distracted eye while working on other stuff during the last few seasons that I tuned in for.

Looking way back to its earliest seasons in the early 2010s when it was an enormous breakout hit on AMC, I recall how good and gripping the show was for several years.

And, I’m gonna say it: The Walking Dead was at its peak when Jon Bernthal was on the show, playing Shane Walsh. Bernthal had “superstar potential” written all over his performance even then, and his dynamic and tension with other characters – particularly Lincoln’s Rick – was often riveting.

Hopefully, The Ones Who Live will bring back some of those early days vibes, but in any event, if you’re still down with what The Walking Dead delivers, this show at the very least will deliver more of the same.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live: when and where can I find it?

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live premieres on AMC at 9p on Sunday, February 25th, 2024 and is also being released on AMC+ the same day.

You’re in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. What do you do?

I tried to come up with really unusual (and maybe even, you know, fun!) ways to deal with a zombie apocalypse. Here are some ideas I jotted down:

  • Dance Dance (Undead) Revolution: Organize a spontaneous flash mob dance whenever a horde of zombies approaches. Break out into an elaborate and synchronized dance routine, complete with catchy music and exaggerated dance moves. Maybe something akin to Buffy the Vampire Slayers’ Once More With Feeling” will happen to get you out of the thing, who knows?
  • Zombie repellent! Leverage a portable device that emits a high-frequency sound specifically designed to repel zombies. This sonic frequency, which is imperceptible to humans but unbearable to zombies, will surely cause intense discomfort and disorientation. Carry the device with you and activate it whenever zombies approach, driving them away with its ear-splitting noise.
  • Go go zombie decoy: Construct a massive inflatable zombie decoy resembling a towering undead giant. Inflate it in a place that’ll draw the attention of nearby zombies. As they converge on the decoy, release a cloud of foul-smelling gas or smoke from hidden vents within the inflatable. The noxious odor and disorienting effect will repel the zombies, giving you time to escape or regroup.
