A Gentleman in Moscow imprisons Ewan McGregor in a Soviet-era hotel

A Gentleman in Moscow

A Gentleman in Moscow is a new Showtime drama. What’s it about?

A Gentleman in Moscow is a prestige drama and historical drama, based on a best-selling novel by Amor Towles, that stars Ewan McGregor as Count Alexander Rostov.

That alone is going to draw quite a lot of interest. Here’s the trailer – which is one of the most clever and creative that I’ve seen in some time. Also, great animation style!

From Showtime’s press release:

SHOWTIME today released first-look images from the new eight-episode series A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW and announced it will premiere Friday, March 29 on streaming and on demand for Paramount+ subscribers with the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME plan before its on-air debut on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME on Sunday, March 31 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The series also will premiere on Paramount+ on March 29 in Canada, the UK and Australia with additional Paramount+ international territories to follow at a later date. An adaptation of Amor Towles’ internationally best-selling novel, A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW follows Count Alexander Rostov, played by Emmy(R) Award-winning actor Ewan McGregor (Star Wars franchise, Halston, Trainspotting), who, in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, finds that his gilded past has placed him on the wrong side of history. Spared immediate execution, he is banished by a Soviet tribunal to an attic room in the opulent Hotel Metropol and threatened with death if he ever sets foot outside again. As the years pass and some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history unfold outside the hotel’s doors, Rostov’s reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery. As he builds a new life within the walls of the hotel, he discovers the true value of friendship, family and love.

“The tighter the grip, the quicker the slip.”

What are some of Ewan McGregor’s best roles that you might not have seen?

Yes, yes, McGregor has been in a ton of high-profile projects, ranging from donning light sabers in the Star Wars-verse to getting his song and dance on in Moulin Rouge to spotting trains and… getting into other trouble in his breakout role in Trainspotting back in the 1990s.

But McGregor has also shown off his range and talents in a variety of other projects that you might not be as familiar with. A Life Less Ordinary is a late ‘90s gem of a film, a very unusual flick that IMDB tags as a comedy, crime movie, and fantasy. It also contains one of Cameron Diaz’s best performances as well.

And when docuseries such as this were far less common, in 2004 McGregor and his friend, Charley Boorman, documented their extraordinary 19,000 mile journey – much of it completed via motorcycle – across Europe, Asia, and North America. That one’s called Long Way Round. I also happen to recall that one of my first ever published blog posts was about this one back in the day!

A Gentleman in Moscow: when and where is it on?
