So why is Black Eyed Peas’ Behind the Front on this best 1,000 albums ever thing?
Behind the Front is the “highest” ranked Black Eyed Peas album on the best 1,000 albums ever project (also see: Monkey Business, #255) and it comprises the style and vibe that I’ve often wished that BEP would return to over the years.
From the first track, the sublime “Fallin’ Up,” and all the way through, it’s a groovy, chilled down, and head bobbing collection of songs. That’s not to say that the Black Eyed Peas of “My Humps” and “Boom Boom Pow” don’t hold its charms, but for me it’s “Joints & Jam” that’s more my… well, jam I suppose you could say.
“Head Bobs” is one of those rare songs that’s both super exciting and yet super laid back at the same time. Overall, it’s all kinds of great, with its slinky mix of lounge funk and hip-hop.
“Karma” is smoothed-out Latin jazz that makes you desire an entire album that’s just songs in this precise mode.
“Communication” reminds me that the beats throughout Behind the Front are expertly produced, building excitement while setting a lounge-y martini lounge vibe.
