So why is Weezer (Green Album) on this best 1,000 albums ever thing?
When this self-titled album – quickly dubbed The Green Album thanks to its neon-green cover, a nod to the band’s bright-blue self-titled debut (#62 of best 1,000 albums ever) – was released in 2001, I recall thinking that Weezer is now a band that had proved it’s in it for the long haul.
The Blue Album is an instant classic, of course, and I was one of the maniacs who was all in on Pinkerton from Day One (an opinion that has only solidified over the years).
The Green Album is crisp and tight at ten songs that run less than a half-hour end to end, and shows off Rivers Cuomo and crew’s expertise in cranking out a mixture of pop punk and hard rock tracks that can infiltrate your thoughts and waking life for days at a time.
None more so – and this goes for Weezer’s entire catalog – than the quiet and gentle (for this band) and ecstatically gorgeous and catchy “Island In The Sun.”
Oh, and that hook. Just flipping fantastic. It’s everything I want in a rock hook.
Hip hip, indeed.
And “Hash Pipe” assures us that Weezer has lost nothing of its ability to rock out with the best bands on the planet. And note too Cuomo’s ability to pull off going full falsetto here on the verses.
“Photograph” has grown on me much over the years. And it helps remind me that this is a band of meticulous craftsmen: I both respect and truly dig Weezer’s music at the same time, if you can… well, dig.
And “Knockdown Dragout” pulls off being really fun, pretty, and rocking at the same time.
