Gangs of Galicia delivers an octopus of a crime drama from northern Spain

Gangs of Galicia

Galicia is a region located in the northwest of Spain, north of Portugal, which extends to the north Atlantic coast.

I know this well because it’s where one of my best friend’s fathers in from (the family owns a restaurant called Casa Luis on Long Island, New York, one of my favorite place on the planet), and it also just so happens that my wife and I will be traveling with my friend and his wife to Galicia this fall for a long awaited trip.

Gangs of Galicia is a new crime drama of Netflix What’s it about?

Which is all to say that as a huge fan of crime dramas of all stripes, of course I had to stop and check out the deal with a show called Gangs of Galicia.

The trailer lets us know Gangs of Galicia is based on a true story, and concerns the following:

When her father’s murder reveals a hidden double life, a lawyer seeks revenge by infiltrating a Galician drug cartel and becoming close to its leader.

Gangs of Galicia is further described on Instagram:

Gangs of Galicia is a vengeance and love story between Ana (Clara Lago), a lawyer who has recently arrived in Cambados in search of answers about the death of her father, and Daniel Padín (Tamar Novas), one of the heads of drug trafficking in Galicia.

The trailer promises a tense and exciting story that takes us to a part of the world most of us in the U.S. and other locales have never had the chance to see in person (though as I mention above I’ll soon be one of the lucky ones there!).

And we get lines such as:

“We have the octopus for the party – arms, head, and all.”

And: “No one fools Padin Sr.”

“He never forgives. Never.”

Nunca.

What else should I know about Galicia?

According to Trip Advisor, top attractions in Galicia, Spain include the Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela, Camino de Santiago, Playa de las Castdrales, and the Tower of Hercules: “Historic lighthouse with a Roman past, offering panoramic sea views amid a coastal park with a sculpture garden. Features a museum and limited entry for an intimate visit.”

I’m looking forward to checking those things out, but mostly I’m looking to explore the local culture via the food scene, local bars and cafes, and hanging out by the beach while playing cards and drinking wine.

Interesting, the Wikipedia page for Galicia does not mention paella, a Spanish specialty. This is particularly interesting because my friend’s dad, the owner of Casa Luis and longtime head chef, makes by far the best paella I’ve ever eaten – and that includes two past trips to Spain.

Gangs of Galicia: where and when can I watch it?
