Homeland, “Representative Brody”: Mr. Brody goes to Washington

Homeland - Representative Brody

Brody is asked to run for a seat in the House of Representatives.

So, the first thing you see is a fleet of SUVs pulling up in front of your house. Then a team of black suited, sunglasses wearing men get out and knock on your door. Finally the Vice President walks into your living room and asks you to run for political office. Would you even be able to think clearly enough to have a conversation let alone make an important decision?

Most shows on TV try very hard to simplify their storyline in order for more people to follow what’s going on. Homeland deserves credit for doing the exact opposite and illustrating that in a situation like this, things can only get more complicated. By playing the reality of every situation, Homeland makes it clear that it’s never safe to make assumptions of any kind and even the smallest character is made up of many shades of gray.</p>

Watching Brody (Damian Lewis) talk to Mike (Diego Klattenhoff) about running for office, it’s impossible to tell what his true motives are. Is he being honest about being of service and making a difference or is he really just concerned with whatever plan he became a part of in Iraq?

The interrogation scene was nothing short of brilliant. The way Carrie (Claire Danes) waited until the last minute to bring up the children and the daughter in college was like a master class in blackmail. I especially liked how Saul (Mandy Patinkin) made it abundantly clear how the situation had changed by saying, “Welcome to the CIA.”

I felt pretty sorry for Carrie when her “date&” with Brody didn’t turn out the way she planned until I remembered that she would tell everybody that they slept together if it helped her do her job. Then, of course, all my pity shifted to Saul as he used a ruler from his desk to make a peanut butter sandwich.

I really did not see the bombing coming and even hours after watching, I’m still speechless.
