Carrie has an “accidental” run in with Brody.
If Nick Brody (Damian Lewis) isn’t a loyal American, he sure is a great actor. This episode wasted no time getting right to the drama.
I’m sure the Department of Homeland Security isn’t real big on irony, but I feel obligated to point out that while Carrie (Claire Danes) is clearly onto something with this necklace, it has absolutely nothing to do with Nick Brody. If he is actually the terrorist sympathizer that they suspect, he’s probably involved in something completely different. It’s this kind of multi-level storyline that make me eager for every episode of Homeland.
I really wasn’t too interested in the backstory of Carrie’s various personal exploits. We’ve already established that she’s damaged, what else do we need to know? What’s important is that her boss, Estes (David Harewood) is smart enough to keep an eye on her. If he can stop her from doing something stupid while she’s outing a terrorist, that’s a win-win.
The most fascinating aspect of this whole situation is the supposed sleeper couple. It’s amazing how much tension is built up around them smiling over breakfast or putting up a flag as a warning signal. I’m hardly an expert in international affairs but if this is the way things work, it’s no wonder people choose surveillance as a career.
The penultimate moment of this episode had to be the meeting of Brody and Carrie and the question of which one is more messed up. We’ve seen that Carrie has no problem getting very close to someone to get what she wants but will she actually sleep with Brody in order to get proof that he turned? Of course, she will. More importantly, if Brody is willing to put two bullets into a deer for trampling his tulips what is he going to do any of the number of people who have betrayed him? I can’t believe I have to wait another week to find out.
