Mad Caddies – Keep It Going: #184 of best 1,000 albums ever!

Mad Caddies - Keep It Going

So why is Mad Caddies’ Keep It Going on this best 1,000 albums ever thing?

Keep It Going includes three of the band’s Top 5 songs, with another, “Coyote,” that’s in the top seven or eight.

But let’s start with the best of the best: “Pyramid Scheme” and “Backyard” are two of the best songs this madcap ska punking SoCal crew have ever produced.

“Backyard” is a perfect song. It might be tempting to call it “ska punk,” but it’s really more laid back, groovy rock with heavy ska/reggae influence. No matter, because it’s simply great, from the incredible vocals and the super catchy chorus to the fantastic horns.

“Pyramid Scheme” is ska punk “proper” if you will, with an ideal balance of the ska and punk bits so as to create an incredibly compelling mid-tempo track. I’ll call out the vocal talents of lead singer Chuck Robertson again here. And oh, the way that organ is layered in too, pretty sweet!

Both “Reflections” and “Coyote” bring in the Mad Caddies’ ability to leverage Latin and other musical influences, showing off range that very few bands are able to pull off.

“Tired Bones” leans into the band’s punk side and proves that they can thrash it with the best of them, and yet it’s also a fantastically fun little romp that reminds of what Green Day can do at their most inventive.

And “Whatcha Gonna Do” is acoustic ska that holds up with the best Sublime output at their most chill and introspective.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?

Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.

But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective review of what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style.
