Covert Affairs, “Sad Professor”: Annie, you’ve got some explaining to do

Covert Affairs - Sad Professor

Annie’s college professor was a CIA operative. No one is surprised.

So, apparently, Annie Walker’s Georgetown University advisor was a CIA operative. Annie is the only one who is shocked by this. I yawned and threw snack food at the TV.

When Professor Mark Ramsey is killed by Pakistani militants, Annie is tasked with attending his funeral and playing nice with his widow to find the details of his last mission and relay them to the CIA. It’s your standard Covert Affairs outing, with inexplicable Annie-angst over something that should have been fairly obvious, like, say, the advisor that tried to talk her out of entering the CIA back in the pilot being a member of the CIA. (Who would’ve thought? Oh wait, everyone). There’s some sweet spy action on a spiral staircase, ten minutes of doubt concerning the innocence of Annie’s supposed ally, and one of those nifty spy-life-parallels-civilian-life storylines that this show seems to love.

In this case, the civilian life storyline is far more interesting as Annie’s sister, Danielle, starts to act on her suspicions about Annie’s real job. The opening car chase was hilarious as Danielle tailed her sister in the family minivan. However, her suspicions are fueled, later, by a hilarious unsuccessful attempt to call her sister at work, you know, at the Smithsonian. Definitely not at the CIA. Nope. Definitely not.

Auggie runs interference for Annie, but by the end of the episode, it’s fairly obvious that Annie is going to have to address this issue with her sister. Danielle isn’t dumb, and it’s a little bit amazing that Annie, living in her guest house, has managed to keep her real job under wraps for two seasons. I can’t wait for next week’s finale, if only because I’m excited to see how Annie handles this. Will she spill? Will she find a new lie to run with? Will the writers stretch this storyline out for a third season?

I sincerely hope not.
