Covert Affairs, “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?”: an idiot’s dream

Oh, I get it, the agent’s name is KENNETH. How clever.

Annie teams up with that guy who played Vincent Van Gogh (Tony Curran) in “Vincent and the Doctor.” Some stuff happens. They live happily ever after, just like they do every week. Also? Danielle continues to irritate the hell out of me.

I was pretty excited to see Tony Curran pop up on Covert Affairs as an MI6 agent who recruits Annie to spy for them, without realizing that she’s already a spy for the CIA. It’s awfully convenient that we’re reminded of Annie’s Smithsonian cover just in time for a story that features it. Annie refers to her working hours at the museum as “popping in” to maintain her cover. It must be nice to have a job, even a fake one, where “popping in” is perfectly acceptable. I like to think that the CIA’s influence can only go so far because I like to pretend that this series takes place in the real world. I mean, I don’t work for the CIA, but I’m pretty sure that fake jobs work better if you put more effort into pretending that they’re real.

Whatever. This week, Annie works at the Smithsonian. For real. Just go with it.

Tony Curran turns in his BBC issued paintbrushes and craziness for a more subdued take as a rough-bred MI6 operative who wants to prove to all the Cambridge grads that he can be a field operative, even though his path to Her Majesty’s Secret Service was paved with night school and juvenile delinquency. Now, on Covert Affairs, “subdued” is code word for “spy-buddy-of-the-week”, meaning no real effort is needed to flesh Kenneth (I see what you did there, Covert Affairs, and it made me roll my eyes) Martin out aside from those everyman details that are meant to make us sympathize with him. And I do sympathize. I feel bad for the .3 seconds of conflict when it looks like Kenny’s hunch is wrong and there’s a nice desk job waiting for him on the other side of the pond.

But don’t worry, this is Covert Affairs, where Annie Walker always gets the job done, even the fake one. She leads the calvary to the villainous-Middle-Easterner-of-the-week and saves the day, sending Kenneth back to Britain with the confidence of knowing that he was right all along.

Oh, and Auggie takes his shirt off.
