Green Day – Warning: #175 of best 1,000 albums ever!

Green Day - Warning

So why is Green Day’s Warning on this best 1,000 albums ever thing?

Warning boasts many high points while also being consistently strong from end to end.

Sitting between the scrappy punk pop glories of Nimrod (#195 of best 1,000 albums ever) and the epic ambitions of American Idiot (#130), Warning is the underrated bridge in Green Day’s evolution — the album where Billie Joe Armstrong let melody, folk-rock touches, and character-driven songwriting rise to the surface.

In short, it’s lean and delightful as hell.

The title track, “Warning,” kicks off the album and is one of the catchiest songs that this band – known for crafting catchy pop punk songs – has ever produced. The guitar hook is simply magic, and Billie Joe Armstrong has never sounded better.

The jaunty “Minority” has many of those same qualities.

“Church on Sunday” is a smasher of a song where you can’t really tell if it’s pop punk or just straight-up fantastic rock and roll, and it doesn’t really matter which answer you end up with there.

“Misery” has a playful, old timey throwback quality to it that reminds us of the best experimentations from Nimrod.

And meanwhile, “Deadbeat Holiday” calls back to the best material from the Insomniac era.

“Castaway” is pure catchy pop punk bliss.

“Macy’s Day Parade,” the album closer, is an exceptional chill acoustic rock track and shows off the band’s expertise in song craftsmanship with the amplifiers turned off.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?

Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.

But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective review of what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style.
