Episode two brings some improvements, but also the creeping prospect of annoyance ahead…
After a busy, ambitious, and at time chaotic series pilot, things have a chance to breathe a little bit here, and that’s a good thing. There are still a lot of characters and back stories and relationships to endure, but the juggling between them worked much better this week. I still have to admit that I don’t know who a lot of the characters are without a decent spate of research first… so there is plenty of room for ramp up / improvement yet.
And I have to add too that during periods when my concentration began to drift, I had to ask myself whether I cared to keep watching this show.
More thoughts on “Man Versus Possum”:
* Pretty weird and interesting that Parks and Recreation also featured possums recently. Possums are not fun creatures in real life. Not fun at all.
* They dropped the simple title this week with the corny crayon underline in favor of a classy-ish opening theme and titles.
* I dug the conversation about Zeke (Craig T. Nelson) “hovering” over Sarah (Lauren Graham) while hunting around Craigslist.
* I find it kind of annoying when Zeke calls Adam (Peter Krause) “sonny.”
* And speaking of annoying, I kept trying to not get overly annoyed by the Max (Max Burkholder) Asperger’s storyline. I’m using the word “annoying” with reference to this show, aren’t I? That said, the scene where Adam and Kristina (Monica Potter) finally come to terms with Max’ condition is quite touching.
* Okay, to end on a brighter note, here are the less annoying / more interesting storylines thus far: Crosby (Dax Shepard) dealing with his past returning to him, stuff involving Adam that doesn’t involve Max (which wasn’t much this week), and Sarah’s new job.
* And also, the “dope smoking” scene at the end was a nice touch. It might help to have the show and characters lighten up (so to speak) more often.
