V, “Welcome to the War”: viva la 5th column

V - Welcome to the War

“The resistance is growing.” – Marcus

I wrote this review on jury duty (shh… don’t tell!), so it’s going to be a live blogging edition. Yes, that’s how dedicated I am to The Cause.

* Any science fiction story is going to inevitably have some holes that will be difficult to fill (see: Lost working up a sweat to cover some acres during its end run) but… let’s just saw that V has its fair share. For example, we have to assume that the Visitors really don’t want to reveal that they are scaly alien things draped in human costume, right? Therefore, when Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell, probably best known from Lost) fairly easily takes out her lone Visitor attacker in her home, ripping some flesh/disguise to reveal the real alien deal, wouldn’t that in theory jeopardize the entire Visitor mission right there? Like, why wouldn’t they send a Visitor SWAT team in, or make sure they were wearing crazy protective armor, or something? Or maybe this one Visitor assassin is incompetent? Or maybe I’m asking way too many questions? I’ll answer the latter: probably.

* “It stings like hell, but it’s located in the other side.” – Alien attacker dude after getting stabbed with a long pointy knife by Erica. This guy’s a real pro, no?

* I love that Ryan Nichols (Morris Chestnut) didn’t tell his wife that she’s pregnant with a half human/half visitor baby. Might be something that you mention when you’re ready to take your relationship to that next level. Ryan later reveals that humans are not suppose to up and get preggers by Visitor pops, so this happens to be a miracle half human/half Visitor child. Hooray!

* So, Ryan explains that the V attacker was “cleaning up his own mess” after the warehouse was infiltrated (and exploded). Sure, no one on Team Visitors would notice their precious R6 serum stuff getting blow’d up. Makes absolute sense… or does it? See first bullet above.

* A new great excuse for staying out all night and forgetting to call your parents: sorry mom, I was on the alien mothership and lost track of time! So says Tyler (Logan Huffman) to momma Erica. And meanwhile, Anna (Morena Baccarin) takes time out of her busy V schedule to listen in. And meanwhile meanwhile, Tyler appears to mom as a hologram. It’s kind of messed up that a mother can’t demand that her 17-year-old son and head home to be grounded or something, right?

* Anna tells Marcus (Christopher Shyer) that she will “make” an army to combat the 5th column (rebels looking to take down the V regime). Perhaps she’s familiar with cloning and midi-chlorians?

* R6 is called a “flu vaccine” and is in reality the stuff that will ominously control humanity or carry out the V’s dark mission somehow.

* Marcus clearly believes that Erica was involved in the warehouse break-in and is determined to show her off as guilty. Again, why not just take her out with the V SWAT team? Oh, I’ll drop it, okay.

* The V forensic technology puts CSI to shame.

* Kyle Hobbes (Charles Mesure), mercenary. He’s the guy that blew up the V warehouse. Erica wants him to lead the resistance. It’s so crazy it just might work.

* Another “holes” question: where are the world governments in this game? Are they just totally content to let the V spaceships and Anna take over the world, or what?

* Father Jack Landry (Joel Gretsch, another sci fi vet and series lead on The 4400) gets healed at a V Healing Center, getting injected with R6. He later dreams of morphing into an alien. Creepy, and perhaps a clue?

* Erica allows Hobbes to escape from the FBI. She’s now playing against all sides. That’s just the kind of position that the resistance/5th column like to fight out of!

* The V’s can read Tyler’s memories but can’t understand them. They are not “burdened by emotional imprints.” So are we saying that the V’s look like Romulans and think like Vulcans, or is the Star Trek paradigm not appropriate here?

* I have to say that seeing the alien spaceships hovering above our cities is one of the coolest parts of the show, great CGI work.

* More of talk of “candidates.” A little derivative of Lost from what we’re learning this season, perhaps. And the two shows now air back-to-back.

* Tyler joins the Peace Ambassadors, and breaks her mom’s heart. You get the sense that she knows she’s being watched now, too.

* Best scene of the show: Val getting the urge to eat a dead rat. That baby’s hungry! Also hearkens back to the glorious camp of the original show.

* So looks like Anna is more like a Queen Bee/Spider (who eats her mate), so when she talks about growing an army, she is being quite literal!
