So why is Boss Hog on this best 1,000 albums ever thing?
Along with bands like the Fastbacks, Cheepskates, and Being Dead, Boss Hog is a band that many music fans may never have heard of as of.
Each of those bands has produced albums that I consider to be Top 100-worthy for this here best 1,000 albums project, and Boss Hog, the band’s self-titled collection of punk blues smashers, is a sizzler that I place before your about-to-get-hot little hands.
Boss Hog is made up of married couple Jon Spencer and Cristina Martinez as its core members. Spencer of course is the guitarist and frontman of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.* While I like that band just fine, Boss Hog is by far my favorite project that he’s ever been associated with. Part of it is the wild explosion of garage and punk rock influence that the band conjures, but Cristina Martinez’s incredible vocals are just as important in the equation.**
* Boss Hog is a reference to Boss Hogg (two Gs in the latter), the comical “bad guy” foil to the Duke family from the wacky early ‘80s comedy adventure show, The Dukes of Hazzard.
** I’ll note too that Martinez has an impressive resume all her own, which includes a background in bands Pussy Galore and The Honeymoon Killers.
Powerhouse tracks like “Winn Coma” and “Green Shirt” sound just as fresh and kickass today as they did three decades ago.
“Ski Bunny” is my favorite Boss Hog song of all – it’s a pure blast of throttling punk rock bliss with a thumping bassline that I can listen to over and over again happily.
I also have a weird story to go along with this song that I’ve been waiting a very long time to reveal: when I listen to “Ski Bunny,” I picture it as the perfect song to either introduce a campus comedy movie or a TV show that’s set at a school or university of some kind.
It actually pains me that this has not happened at some point or another over the last 30 years. The velocity of the song’s tempo and thumping beat lend it perfectly to chaotic camera movement while creating a mega-exciting atmosphere.
In any event: “Ski Bunny” is one of the best songs of the 1990s that very, very few people have ever heard circa 2025.
“Sam,” the album’s closer, slows the tempo while giving up not a single inch in intensity and atmosphere. I’ll repeat again how good Cristina Martinez’s voice is for this style of music. In the space between rock, punk, garage, and blues, she completely owns it.
