“That makes my lady parts beep.” – Laurie
I wait for the moment each week. That moment where I’m purely delighted unexpectedly and laugh at something absurd and wonderful. Cougar Town has been exceptional on delivering of late, and the moment came early on this week when Andy (Ian Gomez) wakes up and throws on his cowboy hat. It’s time for he and Grayson (Brian Van Holt) and the fellas of the cul-de-sac to express the freedoms of suburban men in this modern age (to Enya, of all things!?).
Down slams the wine glass on the table, to coasters be damned! Out comes the popcorn, and if it falls on the floor, not even the mouth vacuums will be deployed to retrieve. Don the high school jeans and the dorky suspenders and awkward ’80s dance movements, for it is time to rejoice!
We also saw some solid character and, dare I say, dramatic developments when we get our first official Jules (Courtney Cox) and Grayson hookup. Jules is dealing with proverbially letting go of Travis (Dan Boyd), who is off visiting the college he’ll be attending in Sarasota.
Cougar Town ascended into becoming a top-notch drama when the producers (including Cox and her husband, David Arquette) decided to fully involve the outstanding ensemble cast each week instead of solely focusing on Jules’ single-fortysomething-mom adventures. Because of that, we were able to see a slow burn on the Jules-Grayson relationship, and the payoff here felt like it was truly earned.
The other major plot line – Laurie (Busy Phillipps) working through her drama issues with boyfriend Smith and his dad – was a bit more uneven, but overall this was another fine outing by this Floridian-based gang of goofs.

The other night I ate shredded coconut out of a bag, because I just freakin’ love the taste of coconut. It’s weird. But at night you can do weird things and it feels okay. This is totally why creepy people online are all scammy at night.
- Eye Weekly: Being paired with a classy comedy like Modern Family made Cougar Town’s crassness and lack of subtlety stand out even more. But as the season progressed, the single-camera sitcom stopped being about Cox’s Jules, a pathetic, age-obsessed divorcee on the prowl, and instead became an ensemble piece about her group of lovably odd suburban friends.
