Suits, “Undefeated”: all’s fair

Suits - Undefeated

“This is a law office, not Lord of the Flies.” – Mike

Harvey apparently meets his match in court while Mike and Rachel spend another episode fighting/not-fighting with one another. It’s cute, how they don’t think everyone can see their inevitable hook-up coming.

One of the great things about latching onto a series in the beginning is how everything is still up in the air. If this was an episode airing three seasons from now, it would have been easy to assume that Harvey will emerge from his case victorious and when Rachel is suspended for leaking case details to a rival law firm, well, of course she was framed.

However, this being the tail-end of the debut season, I found myself sincerely intrigued by the drama and intrigue over at Pearson-Hardman this week. Eric Close, from Without a Trace, guest stars as Travis Tanner, a smarmy, less-than-ethical attorney, who knows a lot about our Harvey and doesn’t mind exploiting those details in the name of sweet sweet victory. Tanner waltzes right into Harvey’s office and taunts him with knowledge of a baseball championship that Harvey missed out on competing in due to an injured shoulder.

“And you know what?” Tanner grins, “They won without you.”

Oh, it is so on.

But the thing is, Travis may be a total douche, but he’s good. He’s consistently one step ahead of Harvey for the entire episode, and since we haven’t really seen Harvey fail at anything yet, I couldn’t help but wonder if this would be it.

Meanwhile, Mike and Rachel are on the hunt for a mole in the firm, someone responsible for leaking the list of individuals involved in Harvey’s case to Wakefield-Cady, thus making it easier for our pal Travis to continue his campaign of superdickery, or, as Mike more accurately identified it, “criminal intimidation,” with Harvey’s witnesses.

Or rather, Mike is on the hunt. Rachel was accidentally hit by friendly fire from Mike’s smoking gun and suspended when Louis fingers her as the mole. She is justifiably angry and sulky and so not talking to Mike for the next half-hour. Mike’s quest for the real culprit is a head-spinning whodunit that leads us into the very bowels of Pearson-Hardman: the IT department. For the record, Benjamin the holier-than-thou Geek Squad alum is my new favorite.

Ultimately, it’s a question of how far are you willing to go to win for our well-dressed duo that determines whether or not they remain undefeated.
