Land of Women is a dramedy on Apple TV+. What’s it about?
Recently, I covered the intriguing-looking new Spanish language crime drama, Gangs of Galicia, so it was interesting that another upcoming new TV show – for Land of Women (or Tierra de Mujeres), a dramedy that takes places in “northern Spain” (Galicia is located in the northwest of Spain, north of Portugal on the Atlantic coast) – will soon be premiering on Apple TV+.
Apple’s press release tells us:
Today, Apple TV+ announced that “Land of Women,” its new six-episode dramedy starring and executive produced by Golden Globe nominee Eva Longoria, will make its global debut with two episodes on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, with new chapters set to unfold every Wednesday through July 24, 2024. The series will also star legendary film and television star Carmen Maura and newcomer Victoria Bazúa. “Land of Women” stars Longoria as Gala, a New York empty nester whose life is turned upside down when her husband implicates the family in financial improprieties, and she is forced to flee the city alongside her aging mother (Maura) and teenage daughter (Bazúa). To escape the dangerous criminals to whom Gala’s now vanished husband is indebted, the three women hide in the same charming wine town in northern Spain that Gala’s mother fled 50 years ago, vowing never to return. The women seek to start anew and hope their identities will remain unknown, but gossip in the small town quickly spreads, unraveling their deepest family secrets and truths.
“My name is Gala Scott,” the Land of Women trailer voiceover begins. “Yesterday, my life was perfect. At least I thought it was.”
We see a fabulous-looking party taking place, and Gala (Eva Longoria) wonders where Fred is. “He should have been here by now,” she says.
Two dudes then show up – Gala thinks they are the caterers, but they are not. One dude, Hank (Jim Kiston), instead is looking for $15 million, and says she has 24 hours to pay up. “Then we gotta visit your daughter and your mother,” he explains.
Cut to Gala needing to get out of New York City on the quick quick: she and her mother (Carmen Maura) make off for La Muga, la mama’s hometown in northern Spain*.
* This of course reignites my excitement that my wife and I are traveling with one of my best friends and his wife this fall: we’re off to visit Lou’s dad’s home of Pontevedra in Galicia, and I could not be more amped about the upcoming trip.
And from there, we’re off to the races for what looks to be a really fun and offbeat dramedy.
Land of Women also co-stars Victoria Bazua as Kate, Santiago Cabrea as Amat, and Amaury Nolasco as Kevin.
Land of Women: when and where can I watch it?
Land of Women premieres on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, June 26th, 2024. Its first season is scheduled to have six episodes, with each released on Wednesdays.
