Royal Pains, “This One’s for Jack”: they all knew Jack

Royal Pains - "THis One's For Jack"

Hank deals with the loss of a patient and friend.

It’s about time something significant happened on Royal Pains. I am a fan of the show and the wacky antics of all the Hamptons regulars, but for a medical show, there aren’t many life and death situations that occur. Considering how likeable Jack (Tom Cavanaugh) was, it seems that his death was probably a calculated move.

The kid with his tongue in a bottle was pretty stupid. Most people have gotten their tongue stuck in or on something once in their lives and removing it is not as big a deal as Hank (Mark Feuerstein) made it out to be.

I understand that Hank’s involvement with the Satsumi brothers was an effort to show us how he deals with loss, but there was also a good point being made. As fun as internet videos are to watch, there is a serious downside to putting yourself at risk for the sake of entertainment.

I was glad to see Jill (Jill Flint) having guilt about Jack. I couldn’t help feeling that she made a mistake by not taking Jack to the hospital earlier. She is a doctor, after all. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some malpractice suits next season.

As for the investment opportunity for HankMed, it seems like nothing more than a new avenue for storylines. If Hank Med starts using cool medical gadgets on their patients, it will go a long way to make the show more interesting. Besides, I would hope that Boris (Campbell Scott) and the rest of the Hamptons residents would find that kind of thing impressive.

Molly Sims isn’t my favorite actress and casting her as a fashion entrepreneur was pretty lame, but giving her sleep apnea as an excuse to test out the smart shirt was the weakest part of the whole show. I would have preferred to see more realistic case of sleep apnea, i.e. a fat guy who snores like a beast.

As far as season finales go, this one was light one events and heavy on set ups for next season, but I did think that Jack’s farewell golf outing was a nice touch.
