Apple TV+ show Me features pre-teen shapeshifting (and life-shifting too?)

Me - Apple TV+

Me is a new Apple TV+ show. What’s it about?

When I was a kid, I saw this movie on cable called Zapped, starring Scott Baio*. If this even rings a bell for you slightly, you’re very likely old-ish, a deep pop culture nerd, or both (like me!).

* This was WAY before the MAGA edition of the real life actor Scott Baio emerged. This was even before the Charles in Charge-era Scott Baio.

Me, a new kid and family friendly Apple TV+ show, reminds me a bit of Zapped due to its focus on a kid first grappling with and then learning how to grapple with newfound supernatural powers. And then from a more modern standpoint, the vibe of the show – including a band of friends who must figure out some deep fantasy-ish mystery going on – will likely remind you of Stranger Things.

Here’s more on Me from the official Apple TV+ press release:

Apple TV+ today released the trailer for the upcoming live-action family series “Me,” an elevated cinematic coming-of-age story from Barry L. Levy (“Vantage Point,”) premiering globally on Friday, July 12. “Me” follows a 12-year-old kid named Ben who is in the throes of middle school (complete with bullies, crushes and school dances!,) as he adjusts to a newly blended family, AND just realized he has super powers. Throughout the 10-episode season, Ben will go on a journey of self-discovery about what having super powers truly means. He finds an ally in his step sister Max, who helps him harness these powers and uncover the secrets behind the mysteries and tragedies of his community… all while trying to come to terms with what it means to be Ben.

And here’s the trailer:

Lucian-River Chauhan plays the lead role, Ben, with other cast members including Abigail Pniowsky as Max, Dilshad Vadsaria as Elizabeth, Amands Reid as Carter, Jessy Yates as Morgan, Kyle Howard as Phil Davis, Jonathan Bergman as Owen, and Brock Duncan as Jason.

The fun wrinkle with Me is that Ben discovers that he’s a shapeshifter and therefore “must figure out who he is and who he wants to be,” so it’s easy to draw the parallels of a coming of age story amidst the other mysteries and fun goings on with this pre-teen group of friends.

And then also figure there are some throughlines with the Harry Potter franchise as well.

Me: when and where can I watch it?

Me premiered on Apple TV+ on Friday, July 12th. Its first season includes ten episodes.
