Jack White – Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016: #154 of best 1,000 albums ever!

Jack White - Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998 - 2016

So why is Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016 on this best 1,000 albums ever thing?

For many years, I longed for a more delicate or introspective Jack White solo album, and Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016 – with 26 tracks and nearly an hour and a half worth of material to sift through – dropped in my lap in 2016 most welcomely.

To take a step back, I’m a massive Jack White fan, as all of the White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather, and White solo albums that I’ve covered on the best 1,000 albums ever project can attest to.

As good as many of those solo albums have been – including Lazaretto (#680 of best 1,000 albums ever), Fear of the Dawn (#605), and Blunderbuss (#437) – there’s been a pretty heavy tilt into heavy, dark, experimental, and loud blues punk across much of that material. Finally, in 2022, Entering Heaven Alive (#87) changed course on that trend and dropped out of the sky like manna from heaven.

Back to Jack White Acoustic Recordings: the wild thing is that overall it’s an even better collection of songs and performances than I could have expected.

I’m already a massive fan of “Top Yourself,” off of The Raconteurs’ brilliant Consolers of the Lonely, and the down home, bluegrass version is also phenomenal.

“I’m Bound to Pack It Up” and “Hotel Yorba” are gorgeous White Stripes standouts, and are just spectacular in acoustic form.

And on top of that, there are tracks like the bluesy, piano-driven “Machine Gun Silhouette,” that can’t be found elsewhere on a full-length album release. And man, those harmonies on this one are so good, trust me.

The same version of “Love Interruption” appears on both Blunderbuss and Acoustic Recordings, but it’s so good that I feel the need to call it out here.

If any of the above is appealing to you and you’ve read this far, you owe it to yourself not to miss “Want and Able.”

A lyrical snippet from Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016 that’s evocative of the album in some way, maybe

I’ve thought about it for a while, and I’ve thought about the many miles. But I think it’s time that I’ve gone away.

What does the “best 1,000 albums ever” mean and why are you doing this?

Yeah, I know it’s audacious, a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot cray cray), bordering on criminal nerdery.

But here’s what it’s NOT: a definitive list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time. This is 100% my own personal super biased, incredibly subjective review of what my top 1,000 albums are, ranked in painstaking order over the course of doing research for nearly a year, Rob from High Fidelity style.
