Where’s the self-satisfied beer bottle clinking, is what I’m trying to say. Or something.
Vinnie Chase (Adrian Grenier) seems as unfocused and out of sorts as Entourage does these days. Entourage was never a particularly plot-driven show; the fun was in seeing the fellas hanging out, partying, getting into minor career/personal crises, having a manic Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) rush in to save the day, and watching the boys clink beer bottles at the end in a most self-satisfied manner. Let’s face it, it’s every guy’s fantasy of an extended bachelorhood among Hollywood’s rich and famous set, and at its best it was very enjoyable and often funny.
During the last few seasons, the laughs have tapered off and the draw to watch was more in the comfort of hanging out with these characters that we know so well by now. But I fear that here in Season Seven, there’s not much that’s super exciting about sticking around these days. Vince might be a little strung out on pain meds and is going through yet another A Lister’s existential plight. Drama’s (Kevin Dillon) looking for yet another project and yet another agent (E in this case, played by Kevin Connolly). Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) has a car service and thought his credit card got stolen from former employee Alex, but it was a mistake. And newly appointed “King” Ari might be invited to bring an NFL team to Los Angeles by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and the other NFL owners.
Oh yeah, in the biggest plot development Vince got a haircut without asking director Nick Cassavetes’ permission.
In short: yawn.
It looks like this season will see Lizzie from Ari’s office (Mrs. Ari wasn’t happy seeing her dancing with Ari in the office) and Scott (Scott Caan) from E’s office (Scott and Vince go skydiving this week, which is likely a precursor to his trying to poach the star actor) making some waves, but the question is do we care?
Where’s the self-satisfied beer bottle clinking, is what I’m trying to say. Or something.
Other thoughts on “Buzzed”:
- I like Ari’s “casual” suit for his shopping trip to the Valley
- “Behead him and I’ll make you queen.” – Ari to Lloyd, with reference to Jeffrey Tambor
- Bob Sagat has a funny cameo, gets interrupted “in the middle of my blowjob story?”
From Around the Web: Entourage, “Buzzed”
- The Washington Times calls Entourage TV’s laziest comedy.
- IGN: How much gas does Entourage have left in its tanks? Judging by the first two episodes of this seventh season, which one could hardly call laugh riots or compellingly dramatic half-hours, the answer to that question would seem to be a resounding “not much.”
