Entourage, “Dramedy”: the famous Teddy Z

Entourage - Dramedy

Looking for something, anything to grasp onto at this point.

Entourage is reaching strange new territory at this point, late in its run now and three episodes into its seventh season. It seems like it’s not really trying to be a comedy anymore, while at the same time it’s trying, I suppose, to transform into something. What that something else is though I’m really at a loss to grasp.

The result this week wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t really anything good to speak of either. There was little to grasp onto. The characters that we know so well are going through the next stage of their respective careers  and plot development on the show seem to be career-driven across the board more than they ever have been before – and we take note, but there seems to be no real momentum or direction for that matter in the proceedings. Ah, we say: Drama (Kevin Dillon) and E (Kevin Connolly) are now an unlikely Hollywood team. Oh, Turtle’s (Jerry Ferrara) driving service is struggling but he’s working gamely to make it work. And we see, Vince (Adrian Grenier) has hit some oddball new existential stage and doesn’t seem to care that jumping out of a plane could be dangerous for his career just as hanging out with waiting-in-the-wings villain Scott could endanger his working and personal relationship with E.

Then there’s the standard cameos: Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson this week, and we see that John Stamos may be on board soon as Drama’s potential new co-star in a sitcom that takes place in Maui (Drama’s big revelation this season is that he may be a comic actor who thinks he’s being dramatical).

And then there’s the ongoing doings over at Ari Gold’s (Jeremy Piven) shop, but it’s nearly too tiresome to even get into. The only thing that perked my interest this week is that Ari engineers Lizzie Grant’s departure from the company to keep the suspicious Mrs. Ari happy, which seems out of character for the typically bombastic but more or less big-hearted Hollywood super-agent.

The best part of the show came at the very final moment when E is goaded into pushing Scott into the expensive dinosaur fossil head that had been purchased earlier, smashing it into pieces. I was hoping to see more action there but then the episode suddenly ended. Ah, I said to myself. Now I can do something else.

From Around the Web: Entourage, “Dramedy”

  • Examiner: Garrett Atkins has a better batting average than Entourage. Zero boobs (despite a mid-day party at Vince’s house), zero chuckles, zero laughs and a single, solitary smile. This episode was so horrendously awful it made me ponder the alternative ways I could have used the 28 minutes I wasted on this show.
