HAPPY ENDINGS - "Four Weddings and a Funeral (Minus Three Weddings and One Funeral)"

“All weddings are pretty gay when you think about it.” – Max

Last week, I shocked the world by saying that I think Happy Endings is a much funnier show than Community. I’m not backing down now. No, far from it. I am here today to make an even more shocking proclamation: Happy Endings is the funniest show on TV (sorry, Parks and Rec. I still love you!).

It is widely assumed that Happy Endings will get renewed for a third season. But an assumption is far from a guarantee. As much as I hope the show comes back, “Four Wedding and a Funeral (Minus Three Weddings And One Funeral)” feels like it could serve as a pretty damn satisfying series finale. Happy Endings started with a wedding (Alex and Dave’s), it makes sense that it would end at one (Derek and Eric’s). Happy Endings has grown up in front of our eyes in the two seasons since Alex left Dave at the alter.

In lieu of a formal review, I figured it best to break down television’s funniest comedy’s second season finale bullet-point style!

Here’s what we learned from the Happy Endings gang this week:

* All weddings are pretty gay when you think about it.

* Apparently, the domain name http://www.thingsthataregay.gov is taken. Bummer.

* The name of the guy who played Fez is Wilmer Valderrama, not Wilver Valderando. Easy mistake to make, Alex.

* Sometimes being the boss’ “aside guy” doesn’t pay off.

* Chances are Mars will see its first black Sheriff before Arizona does.

* Chicago has at least three male Madonna cover bands: Mandonna, Maddonald, and Material Earl. Did someone say spin-off show?

* Slicing pigs in blankets in half and disguising a napkin as a wedge of brie are great ways of cutting wedding costs.

* Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) pulls off the chick-in-a-tuxedo look extraordinarily well. Jane (Eliza Coupe), god bless her, not so much. Perhaps yellow is just not her color. “My baby looks like pee!”

* Skype tables are the future of weddings.

* Ski-boxing is a sport invented by energy drinks.

* Penny (Casey Wilson) went to prom with a “murder-ball” player.

* Brian Austin Green is still alive!

* Don’t eat cured meat if you have to squeeze into tight clothing. On a related note, don’t eat one day-long super-meal instead of three sensible meals if you have to squeeze into tight clothing.

* The opening lines of “Like A Prayer” don’t really make sense in the context of a pep-talk.

* Penny might have “unresolved feelings” for Dave (Zachary Knighton). Dave and Alex might have unresolved feelings for each other. On a lessor show (I’m looking at you, How I Met Your Mother!), either of these developments would be eye-roll worthy. Happy Endings finds a way to make it genuinely sweet.
