There are some things you just can’t plan for.
So, I think I spoke too soon when I wrote that the previous episode was the best one thus far this season because the newest episode was definitely my favorite one to date. This week we head back in time to the day that Amy was born. I wonder if maybe the series should have started with Amy’s birth or soon before because then it might have been easier to invest in Reagan and Chris’ new adventure and the episodes might have had more humor in them as this one did.
We open with Reagan nine months pregnant and working on the only thing she feels she has control over, her birthing plan. Well, for the time being she has control over it. One thing I would have liked would have been some insight as to why we are getting a flashback episode six episodes into the season. It just seems a little out of place, but nonetheless entertaining. When Chris comes home with a birthing video they decide to sit down and watch it and are instantly horrified by what they see. I definitely don’t think watching a graphic video of childbirth right before you give birth is the best idea. I personally feel that if you haven’t given birth it’s one of those things you should stick with hearing about before experiencing it for yourself, especially since every woman’s recount of their experience is different.
So, of course the birthing plan goes right out the window once Reagan actually goes into labor. When she and Chris arrive at the hospital they soon learn that Reagan’s doctor is not available to deliver Amy and that a young good-looking male doctor will be doing so instead. Reagan is not happy with this, primarily because of her fear of defecating while in labor. Unfortunately she has no choice in the matter and makes him swear not to say anything if it does happen. She actually has the look of death in her eyes when she threatens him. Reagan initially was planning for a natural child birth, in other words no epidural.
But it’s not long before she gives in and has an epidural and becomes quite loopy. But, she regains all sense of herself, well, sort of, when after four hours of pushing the doctor informs her that she will have to have a C-section. She did try to convince Chris that they should go home and come back the following day to try the pushing again. I think the funniest part of the whole scene was Reagan singing Lives “Lightning Crashes” as they prepare to take her for the C-section. When they finally leave the hospital with Amy they ask the nurse the one question all new parents want to ask but may or may not, where’s the instruction sheet? The writers definitely need to capture more of this humor in future episodes.
There wasn’t one thing about this episode that was out of place. We learned some interesting things about the other members of the cast as well. Nick Cannon’s character Calvin actually used to be Ava’s driver before becoming her show announcer. That probably had something to do with the fact that the previous announcer was on the older side and when he gave a website address he actually included the http part. Missy used to have really long hair that she hadn’t cut since her early teens and in an effort to convince Ava to go to the hospital to be with Reagan she allowed Ava to cut it and it ended up being a very messy and asymmetrical pixie cut. And last but not least, Ava was still Ava. Making everything about her, but, somehow coming through in the end.
