Why do we love Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test?
It’s ridiculous, it’s weirdly inspiring, and it’s a reminder that while the Surreal Life-esque cast is mostly here for fame and exposure – and occasionally for a redemption arc (cough Sandoval, or #Scandoval, or whatever that half of TomTom is calling himself these days), the real-life men and women of the special forces do this stuff to defend our country every day.
To be clear, these celebrities, athletes, and Bravo-verse veterans undergo legitimately brutal conditions and challenges – drown-proofing, arctic water dunks, desert runs, helicopter drops, you name it – and I for one always end up being impressed even while watching from the luxury of the Pop Thruster Command Center.
With that being said, let’s get to the silly and the sublime in breaking down the Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test Season 4 trailer and cast.
Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test Season 4 teaser trailer
What does the teaser trailer tell us? Not much, but such is the nature of teaser trailers.
We get the typical, pounding drums, gravelly narration about how “only the toughest survive,” with glimpses of sand, cold, and tears. There’s also reality stars and former pro athletes getting screamed at, shoved underwater, stumbling through mud, and breaking down mid-challenge.
The fun stuff, in other words.
Vanderpump Rules & The Valley alumni: Brittany Cartwright
We must start with Brittany Cartwright, because I’m a Vanderpump Rules superfan, and Brittany’s presence alone gives this season instant Bravo-universe juice and a reason to tune in at all.
Sidenote I: Cartwright’s ongoing separation (but not quite divorce?) from husband and Vanderpump legend Jax “You Just Got Jaxxed” Taylor lends Brittany’s participation even more intrigue.
Sidenote II: Which brings us back to our guy Tom #Scandoval, who improbably (and weirdly inspiringly) nearly made it to the Season 2 final round of World’s Toughest Test.
So Brittany doesn’t just walk into this season; she parachutes in carrying all the baggage from the Vanderpump Rules Connected Universe (VRCU).
Kody Brown = peak stunt casting
This is FOX at its absolute most bizarre and diabolical: Kody Brown, patriarch of Sister Wives, signing up for waterboarding drills and desert punishment.
This isn’t casting. This is performance art. The desert might finally give us the reality TV schadenfreude that four wives and 18 kids couldn’t deliver.
The NFL grab bag quotient: Manziel, Decker, Cobb
- Eric Decker and Randall Cobb: oh yeah, solid NFL players, I remember those guys.
- Johnny Manziel → OH, I INDEED REMEMBER JOHNNY FOOTBALL.
Johnny F-ball is the chaos agent here. He’s the guy you throw into the desert just to see what happens. Will he flame out instantly? Will he somehow thrive, or maybe start a side hustle in the barracks? Either way, the producers know exactly why they cast him.
The family duo “twist” (snooze alert)
Every season needs a “twist,” and here it is: family pairs this time around. We’ve got:
- Teresa + Gia Giudice (Real Housewives of New Jersey)
- Eric + Jessie James Decker (NFL guy + country star)
- Andrew East + Shawn Johnson East (NFL journeyman + Olympian wife)
This feels… snoozy. Cute? Maybe. But when the challenges involve hypothermia and helicopters, will “mother-daughter bonding” really land?
Season 4 predictions: a rando shall triumph
History lesson: this show loves its randos. The Olympic athlete you didn’t recognize, the reality star you forgot existed – they’re the ones who quietly grind through the pain and actually end up winning.
So yes, Brittany and Sandoval will get the Bravo headlines, Manziel will generate memes, and Kody Brown will spawn confusion, but the champ is probably hiding in plain sight somewhere down the cast list.
Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test Season 4: so when is it on and stuff?
Check out Brittany, Kody, Johnny, and the rest of the loveable randos on September 25th on FOX.
I’ll be stocking the Pop Thruster Command Center with snacks and bevvies in preparation.
