“We no longer f— the earth, we DP it.” – Tony Hayward
I remember very little about the original Coon episode, though two things come to mind. The first is the part where Cartman is watching an innocent young couple kissing in the park, and he assumes the woman is being raped. It was outlandish, but funny nonetheless. The second thing I remember about the episode was how completely unfunny the rest of the episode was.
I don’t know anyone who remotely liked it, and I doubt there was anyone clamoring for a sequel (much less the expected third part to follow). Yet one was made. And, though it had more than the singular funny moment of the original, it also wasn’t particularly good either.
This time around, The Coon isn’t not fighting crime alone. He put together a whole team of other equally unimpressive heroes including Stan as Tool Shed, Token as Tupperware, and Kyle as Mosquito (I think, he could have been one of the others perhaps). Also, Mysterion returns to join Coon & Friends, and we still have no idea who he is. If you’re wondering about Professor Chaos (and honestly, why would you be?), he’s locked in a holding cell with nothing but a poop bucket.
Cartman becomes concerned when a new superhero named Captain Hindsight is getting all the spotlight by appearing at disaster scenes and telling the rescue workers how things should have gone down the first time around. The Coon and Friends want him to join their ranks, but when he refuses, they photoshop pictures of Captain Hindsight having sex with Courtney Love (actually Butters in disguise).
Meanwhile, BP causes another oil spill in the gulf and even eventually drills a hole through the universe, releasing hundreds of monstrous creatures including Lovecraft’s Cthulhu. Luckily, BP CEO Tony Hayward is really sorry and shows it in a series of apology ads. His new, well thought out plan to close the vortex to hell is to drill into the moon, causing a shift in the oceans’ tides and giving relief workers the ability to get down to the hole.
Mosquito (again, I think this is Kyle) comes up with the idea to host a bake sale in order to raise money for the victims of the oil spill/demon attack. The Coon disagrees, vehemently, and attacks Mosquito with his razor claws. In response, the rest of the group kicks him out. Realizing that his former accomplices are now his enemies, he leaps out into the night to stop them from hosting the bake sale.
South Park has used two- and three-part episodes quite often since Cartoon Wars (they’ve done it before, but not with the regularity of recent seasons) and for the most part, the results have been excellent. And I think the disaster movie parody that comes out of the BP stuff is funny and has potential to be even funnier. I just can’t get behind a whole other half hour of Cartman speaking in a Christian Bale voice.
More thoughts on “Coon 2: Hindsight”:
- The image of the BP (now called DP) logo is unbelievably raunchy, even for South Park standards. Pause your DVR and really look at what you’re seeing.
- Great callback to “Free Willzyx” with the whale corpse still “dancing” on the moon.
- “This is not a blessing, it’s a curse.” – Captain Hindsight
