“Mint Berry Crunch isn’t afraid of his fat sister.” – Bradley
As someone who thought the original “The Coon” episode from Season 13 was possibly one of the worst episodes of South Park’s illustrious history, I’m happy to see it improve greatly over the course of this season’s Coon trilogy. And lo and behold, the gripping conclusion, “Coon vs. Coon and Friends,” is the best overall and can hold a candle with the very greatest South Park episodes.
This time around, Kenny tries to once again explain to his friends that he has died almost 100 times and keeps coming back to life to find that everyone he knows has forgotten he died in the first place. To try and prove it, he shoots himself in the brain in front of everyone as they watch in horror. But just like before, Kenny wakes up in his bed, Groundhog Day-style (well, kinda).
Kenny’s/Mysterion’s power/curse could very well have come in handy as Cartman/Coon is using his alliance with Cthulhu to destroy all of his most hated targets, from the Jewish people to Whole Foods to Burning Man to Justin Bieber and his fans. His most hated enemy, though, are the Coon and Friends themselves (I love how they still call themselves Coon and Friends just to piss Cartman off). Using Cthulhu’s powers, he has them all banished to the dark oblivion (though Mint Berry Crunch escapes by cowardly running away). Though everyone else is trapped, Kenny/Mysterion kills himself inside the other dimension and is able to be brought back to the real world.
He confronts the Goth kids who explain that Cthulhu can only be killed by another immortal. So outside the Justin Bieber concert (what a great prepositional phrase), Mysterion/Kenny tries to attack Cthuhlu, but the dark god only brushes him off to go after Cartman’s next target.
Suddenly, a mysterious being appears and begins to explain to Kenny/Mysterion that he is actually an alien being from another planet named Gok Zarrah and that he has been sent to earth to save humanity from evil beings like Cthulhu. Or so Kenny/Mysterion thought. In actuality, the being is talking to Mint Berry Crunch, who it turns out is a real super being. MBC attacks Cthulhu with an array of Mint- and Berry-related attacks (each with a satisfying crunch) and banished the evil monster back to the dark oblivion, though not before rescuing the other Coon and Friends first.
In the end, the rest of Coon and Friends are mightily impressed with Mint Berry Crunch’s true superpowers and Kenny is distraught that still nobody realizes he has powers as well. He decides that he is too tired of it all and just wants to go to sleep, so he pops another bullet into his brain. Across town, Mrs. McCormick wakes up to the feelings of labor pains and shoots out another baby Kenny, signifying that the supposed break in continuity from “Cartman Joins NAMBLA” is (basically) not a break at all. And really, who’s going to nitpick about that, especially when “Coon vs. Coon and Friends” is a pretty fantastic episode.
Lingering thoughts about “Coon vs. Coon and Friends”:
- The Coon’s ultimate fate: being locked in his own hideout’s prison cell with Professor Chaos/Butters and a bucket of Butter’s feces to eat.
- More fun is poked at LeBron James this week. Not quite as funny as last week, but still very well-deserved.
