“We’re The Street Profits, not The Street Deficits.” — Montez
I mentioned in the review for the Love & WWE: Bianca & Montez pilot episode that this reality TV docuseries does this rather unusual thing where they show people – all fans of the WWE super couple, we imagine – asking questions to someone behind a camera while out and about in the world, and then Bianca Belair and Montez Ford respond to said questions from the comfort of their living room couch.
Well, that dynamic continues in this second episode, and it seems that they’re using this conceit (apologies for the fancy-ish word there) to set up the topic or theme for the coming episode. And, wouldn’t you know it, this episode centers on the topic that happens to be the same exact things as the episode title: “Planning A Baby”).
One other quick side note before we dive in further: it was also made clear in the pilot that Bianca’s celebrity/performer/wrestler “brand” is based in part on her massive and super long ponytail, which she likes to twirl around like a lasso for dramatic effect. I just happened to notice that she also has a tattoo on the side of her face, next to her right eye, of a long ponytail or hair braid or something. Branders gonna brand, I suppose.
We learn that Bianca has “baby fever.” Montez seems a little more ambivalent on the topic, but the two agree to visit a fertility doctor.
Meanwhile, Montez continues his quest to get to WrestleMania, but first he must take on a WWE opponent named Otis, who “is five times” the size of Montez, we learn. Montez… skirts the line on talking about the “competitive” aspect of his professional wrestling career by talking about how motivated he is to show off his “range” in his match against Otis on WWE’s Monday Night Raw program.
Interestingly, a little while later Bianca talked about “using your storylines” over the course of Monday Night Raw appearances in further of one’s career, and I’m really left wondering what kind of line that Love & WWE is trying to draw on being up front about the fact that professional wrestling has a preordained outcome.
I’ve also long been vaguely aware that shows like Monday Night Raw and Smackdown are used in large part as marketing vehicles to drive purchases of pay per view events (namely WrestleMania), but in hearing more about how Bianca and Montez go about their performances and careers, that fact is driven home even more clearly.
“Otis is a large human being,” Montez notes to his tag team partner, Angelo Dawkins, of their upcoming match. The topic then turns to whether Montez will be able to pick Otis up. Dawkins teases Montez that he and the boys will be roasting Montez if he’s unable to accomplish this. “We’re The Street Profits, not The Street Deficits,” Montez notes.
At WWE Raw, Montez and Dawkins wear baseball-style uniforms with their name, The Street Profits, written on them. And meanwhile, massive Otis and… not really massive at all Chad Gable are their opponents, and I guess their team’s name is “Shooooooooooosh” because that’s what displays on their t-shirts. Good times.
We see some highly edited highlights of the match, and Montez successfully is able to pick up and slam Otis. He also does one of those off the top rope slams as well. We see examples of social media posts on screen lauding Montez’s efforts, so all seems to be well in Montez and Street Profits Land for the time being.
I can see why Bianca and Montez were cast in a reality TV docuseries as they are both quite personable, and they have an easy and goofy chemistry with each other.
The topic of having a baby comes up again, and Bianca notes that they already have a 13-year-old… which happens to be grown man Angelo Dawkins, who is sitting right behind them in the car when she says this.
Back on the home front, we’re introduced to Bianca’s best friend, Jenae. Over wine, Jenae “no pressures” Bianca over having a baby… but clearly she wants her to have a baby so that their kids will be similar ages. Bianca discusses how she wants to “crossover” in her career to superstardom as male wrestling stars like John Cena have done, so there’s a lot for her to consider in thinking about children.
Meanwhile, Montez and his old friend Cornell shoot hoops, and Montez talks about how this is his third year that he’s hoping that he’ll get into WrestleMania, while Bianca’s career is clearly soaring. Cornell advises that when it’s Montez’s time, it’s all going to be worth it. Meanwhile, both guys’ shooting skills seem to be pretty mediocre at best.
At the fertility clinic, the doctor talks about the biological clock, and circles something on a piece of paper with a green highlighter for emphasis. The age of the woman is one of the biggest factors in achieving pregnancy. Bianca also rightly notes her concerns about being pregnant with the physicality of her job. The doc says that given these factors, she could be out of work for up to 18 months, which gives both Montez and Bianca pause.
Bianca now understands that she could miss up to two WrestleManias, and she needs to give getting pregnant some more thought.
