I’m a sucker for weirdo reality TV shows and docuseries. What can I say: I find the human condition fascinating in its many colors and facets. And if there’s some heavy handed reality TV editing going on… sometimes I can even look past that as well.
When it comes to the cottage industry-meets-sub genre of reality TV shows that focus on hooking people up with one another or documenting ongoing relationships, I’m all about Love Is Blind, 90 Day Fiancé, and Love at First Sight these days.
Which brings us to Couple to Throuple, a new Peacock show that leaves even this grizzled reality TV warrior a little bit taken aback. Here’s the official description:
Four couples new to non-monogamy spend a month at a tropical resort, where they freely experiment with bringing a third love into their relationship. Cameras follow the couples 24/7 as they meet, mingle and date a whole host of singles, all of whom are experienced in polyamory.
The Couple to Throuple trailer asks this burning question: “If you were given the chance at non-monogamy in paradise, what would you do?”
Scott Evans is our “guide” in watching four “curious couples… turn that fantasy into a reality.”
One couple includes two men: one identifies as bi-sexual, and he describes the other as a “don’t knock it ‘till you try it sexual.”
Every few days, a new “open minded single” is invited to the island to “throuple up with them in the resort.” Evans notes that the beds are large enough to fit three, which is very accommodating of the show producers.
At one point, we see Evans at the door of one of the resort’s rooms. He hears some squealing inside, smirks, and says, “Y’all all right in there?”
Unleash the wacky sound effects.
But it’s not all fun and throuple games, people. There will be “experts” who will “test your threshold on watching your partner get intimate with your chosen third.”
Just me or does “chosen third” sound a little dystopian sci fi nightmare? Let’s set that aside for now.
Scott Evans then talks about everyone getting their “poly on,” and then we see another couple, a man and a woman this time, and the guy says, “I keep getting these uncontrollable boners.”
Throuples, chosen thirds, uncontrollable boners. What else could we ask for out of reality TV, let alone the universe?
Other choice quotes:
- “Can we get some lube, lube, lube?”
- “Use your mouth. That is an order.”
- “Last night was a workout.”
- “At the moment, I don’t see how sex works.”
Keep in mind this is all from a two and a half minute trailer.
Peacock is releasing new episodes of Couple to Throuple on Thursdays, and there are currently three episodes available.
