Sin City Murders examines “chilling homicide cases” in Las Vegas

Sin City Murders

Sin City Murders is a new Oxygen True Crime docuseries. What’s it about?

I wasn’t aware of how deep the Oxygen network had gone into the “true crime” docuseries space until recently. In fact, it’s branding itself as Oxygen True Crime these days.

And in terms of city-specific shows that focus on homicides, Oxygen has already visited New York (New York Homicide), Los Angeles, Orange County, Atlanta, and (Real Murders of Los Angeles, Real Murders of Orange County, and Real Murders of Atlanta.

I’d like to think that they didn’t model those last four series titles on The Real Housewives of… but I’ll just leave that alone for now.

Anyway, the real crime train now rolls into Las Vegas with Sin City Murders:

Sin City Murders recounts chilling homicide cases ranging from a greed-motivated casino slaying in the heart of the strip to a professional hit on a legendary lounge act to a disappearing influencer found encased in a desert tomb, all unique to this vibrant and popular destination. With firsthand accounts by the investigators, who have one of the highest solve rates across the entire U.S., and families who lived through these cases, each hourlong episode unravels a specific investigation that deeply impacted the surrounding Las Vegas community and ultimately highlights the justice that is brought to the victims and their loved ones.

From a video clip from an upcoming episode, this looks like pretty standard documentary-style fare where we see things like grainy black-and-white video footage of a parking garage stamped with “Official Police Footage,” interspersed with voiceovers, interviews with witnesses to the murder and law enforcement officials and slightly (but not too slightly, if you can dig) disturbing music as backdrop.

Sin City Murders: when and where is it on?

Sin City Murders premieres on Oxygen True Crime on Sunday, February 25th, 2024 at 7p. The premiere episode is called “Vanishing of a Showgirl,” and involves the disappearance – and murder, it seems – of a Luxor Hotel dancer.

By the way: I’m guessing the Las Vegas Tourism Board isn’t going to be actively promoting Sin City Murders, but who knows?

What’s the most popular Oxygen True Crime show of all time?

I tried to figure out which Oxygen True Crime TV show or episode has the highest ratings/audience in its history. While I couldn’t track that down, I was able to discover that as of 2018, the second part of Aaron Hernandez Uncovered became the highest rated true crime show in its history at that time, bringing in 1.25 million viewers, with the program in total seeing 4.37 million viewers.

The Aaron Hernandez story cuts across the sports world, celebrity culture, and true crime. Hernandez was a star tight end on the New England Patriots, but was arrested and later convicted for the murder of Odin Lloyd after playing for only three seasons. Part of Hernandez’s story certainly relates to the disturbing potential that head injuries (CTE) from playing violent sports like football can have in promoting erratic and even violent behavior.

I hope that The Dynasty: The New England Patriots gives the Aaron Hernandez story the focus that it deserves in documenting the Patriots’ successes, scandals, and legacy during the 21st century.
