Workaholics, “Karl’s Wedding”: creepin’ on the come-up

Workaholics - Karl's Wedding

“Those are some real classy dogs up top. They’re barking at me.” – Adam

Sure, Blake (Blake Anderson) and Anders (Anders Holm) are strange dudes, but Adam (Adam Devine) just takes it to another level of skeeviness entirely.

In “Karl’s Wedding,” we learn that when Adam was 16, he made a marriage pact (an agreement to get married if they are both single when they reach a certain age) with an 11-year-old girl. “She was 11, but she acted really old. Like 13 at least,” Adam says, as if that makes it less creepy.

Well, actually it’s a little worse than that. She was really only nine years old at the time of the pact. Plus she was hired by Adam’s mom to tutor a boy five years her senior. Does the fact that Adam probably wasn’t reading at grade level surprise anyone? The tutor/dream girl lied about her age and used Adam for rides to Burger King. Why Adam would be willing to make a marriage pact with an 11-year-old, but not a nine-year old, isn’t immediately apparent. Sometimes I guess it’s best not to think about things too hard.

Adam is reminded of his twisted pact when Anders’ friend Bunny (Carla Gallo!) shows up for a visit. Bunny and Ders have an agreement that if they are ever single at the same time, they will hook up. Ders’ romantic fantasies of sexy, private time with Bunny are dashed when he learns that Karl (Kyle Newacheck) is getting married and the wedding is to be held at his house during the weekend that Bunny is in town.

Karl is marrying a “classy” chick, with a good job at a local credit union, named Hannah. Karl is head over heels — apparently, due in no small part to the fact that she lets him “pork her while she’s asleep — and trying desperately to shed his “water trash” image. His commitment to change goes so far that he willingly “sold the rape van, quit selling weed, and even got glasses to fix the wonky eye.” No longer requiring them, he gives Blake his gas mask, his antique Zong and a box full of slammers (presumably to use for playing Pogs)

Dateless for the wedding, Adam tracks down the aforementioned youngster and asks her to accompany him. He rolls up to her house in a horse drawn carriage bearing gifts: a $70 dress to wear to the reception, a $22 bouquet of flowers and a giant bag of popcorn flavored jelly beans (her favorite). “I’m a rich dude now and I came to proclaim my love…so uh…look at the top hat.” Oh yeah, he’s also wearing a top hat. “Quite frankly, you developed into a real sexy broad. Those are some real classy dogs up top. They’re barking at me,” he continues, pointing at her chest. Man, that Adam; his game sure is tight. And extremely creepy.

The wedding preparations are going swimmingly. That is until Blake accidentally catches Hannah in a little al fresco sex act with one of Karl’s buddies. He’s forced to tell the entire gathering what he witnessed while the happy couple are standing at the alter, preparing to say their vows. Karl is understandably crushed. Hannah appears to be relieved. “I was just trying to piss my parents off by marrying water trash,” she admits.
