The League, “The Light of Genesis”: pleasure chest

The League - The Light of Genesis

“Sounds like she has a wicked case of The Kevins.” – Jenny

There is something just a little off about “The Light of Genesis.” I can’t really put my finger on exactly what it is, but for some reason it lacked the zip of a typical episode of The League. All of the elements are there — Andre gets shit on by everyone in the crew, Taco comes up with a cockamamie business scheme, Ruxin does something evil, Kevin gets sexually humiliated — but the final product feels a tad sluggish.

Eliza Dushku guest stars in “The Light of Genesis” as Kevin’s (Stephen Rannazzisi) flirtatious Krav Maga instructor. After she gets especially handsy with Kevin during a training session, he starts to wonder whether he should tell Jenny (Katie Aselton). “You’re not cheating on her, it’s all incidental contact,” Ruxin tells him. Kevin eventually caves and tells his wife, but she’s not particularly interested. Jenny is focused on finding a healthy running back to round out her fantasy line-up. Dushku gets a couple of good scenes, but I would like to see the writers get a little more mileage out of Kristen. Dushku has great comedic timing, but she just didn’t put them to enough use tonight.

While Kevin is getting groped by a hot martial artist, Taco (Jonathon LaJoie) is hatching his next million-dollar idea: Neckflix. Neckflix is pretty much Netflix but with neck ties instead of DVDs. As far as Taco’s business ventures go, Neckflix is the least crazy/dangerous/gross one to date, but it’s also one of the least funny.

The meat of the episode revolves around Ruxin joining a wacky religious cult called The Light of Genesis. After Pete sends some nerdy missionaries over to Ruxin’s house as a prank, Ruxin discovers that The Light of Genesis guys are fantasy football geniuses. It’s their only vice, so they’ve devoted their lives to it. Ruxin joins the group and pumps them for start/sit advice. Ruxin’s faith is tested when he is asked to renounce all fantasy football leagues but the cult. “I am in one cult, and it is the cult of Shiva!” he declares as he ditches the wackos and rejoins his friends. Although I guess his friends would also qualify as wackos.
