Forbidden Love: TLC docuseries explores interfaith relationships

Forbidden Love

Forbidden Love is a new TLC docuseries. What’s it about?

The docuseries 90 Day Fiancé became something of a reality TV show phenomenon in part because of the inherent human drama around the dynamic of an American and their fiancé who is from somewhere else in the world trying to figure out both the logistics of new citizenship and a new culture while a very real clock ticks on the expiration of their K-1 Visa.

From that standpoint, it makes sense that TLC would go further down the line of spotlighting relationships from different backgrounds, and Forbidden Love, which focuses specifically on the relationships between people of different religious faiths, is a new foray in that direction.

From the official press release:

Embark on a journey of love and faith in TLC’s all-new relationship series FORBIDDEN LOVE, which will follow four couples deeply in love who must come to terms with the one major hurdle complicating their relationships – religion. Hailing from different faiths, one partner from each couple is converting or has decided to relinquish their family-of-origin and culture entirely. Facing such intense traditional differences, can their relationships endure the trials of converting or will their love falter under the pressure? A compelling exploration of the ties that bind, FORBIDDEN LOVE premieres Sunday, July 21 at 10pm ET/PT on TLC.

In the Forbidden Love trailer, we hear from people who are featured in the docuseries who hail from all different kinds of backgrounds:

  • “Growing up Amish is kind of like growing up in the 1800s.”
  • “I’ve witnessed my father speaking in tongues.”

We then start to hear about the stories and relationships that we’ll follow during the series:

  • “Traditionally, Orthodox Jews won’t date women that aren’t Jewish, but sometimes in life, the Jewish boy falls in love with an Italian Catholic girl.”
  • A woman describes herself as being from Jefferson City, Missouri who is a white, conservative Catholic. She then says, “So you can imagine the shock when I announced that I married a Muslim

If you’re a fan of 90 Day Fiancé and are interested in the challenges and opportunities that people from different faiths have when they find one another, Forbidden Love might be something that you’d like to check out.

And side note that my wife and I come from different faiths, and working through the challenges particularly around handling family concerns during our wedding process taught us a lot about our own common bonds and what we were looking for in one and and another and in life.

Forbidden Love: when and where can I watch it?
