Susan Strong returns to enlist the help of Finn and Jake.
Susan Strong, the painfully simple-minded but physically strong friend of our heroes, returns to the series requesting the help of Finn and Jake. Her mutant… I mean fish people living in the sewers were driven out of their “Beautopia” due to the “Glub-Glubs.” Susan now calls on the to help her with the power of their brave hearts and their magic flower aka fire.
This episode stands out due to two very important scenes. One involves Susan pushing Finn’s head into the water thinking he has gills like the rest of fish people. She quickly discovers that Finn lacks gills. The exchange between them shows a subtle character moment that many live action shows act. This moment comes full circle when Susan has Finn feel up her hood. He notices something is not there anymore and there is another great moment of understanding between them.
The humanity and the comradeship of these scenes make the episode special. They also provide us with more insight into how lonely Finn feels being the only human in the land of Oo. Among all this great storytelling is some inventive animation to even things out.
Jake uses his powers in inventive ways in this episode. Susan pulls him into an oar and he constantly flaunts his morphing abilities like arbitrarily becoming a dolphin to scare the fish people senseless. When the team finally fight the “glub-glubs” aka the pool floaties from the stomach of Cthulhu, we see more inventive uses of Jake’s animation. He weaves himself up the tower so he can re-ignite the flame of utopia. Opposite of him is a spiraling abomination. It is a unique scene for a kid’s show like this. Finn and Jake’s adventures continue to tickle the escapist in all of us.
