When King Snugadoodle of the Huggaboopies threatens the life of Jake the dog’s “everything burrito,” you know everyone’s favorite capricious human boy will take action. Adventure Time’s third season continues the show’s tradition of surrealist animation and whimsical adventure.
Anything can cause evil in the world of Oo. Even a group of round, cute-thingies that can’t walk two steps without exploding can cause nightmares. This episode opens with our zany duo doing a ditty while Jake makes his “everything burrito.” The Huggaboopies then challenge Finn and Jake.
And what do Finn and Jake do when they see a bunch of walking ice cream balls? They take cute pictures with them to share with their friends. Enraged, Snugadoodle and his army leave, only to return in the dead of night to torture Finn and Jake. After warning the duo, the army returns… only to humiliate themselves. The little cute abominations cannot even handle the dandelions they are holding without disemboweling each other. Finn and Jake overhear their private meeting and find out that all they want is respect. So then Finn and Jake decide to think of a strategy that will let the Huggaboop people think they are winning a fight, but in reality are not. Bring in the Lumpy Space Princess, a duck, and a dopey bun and you have a massacre layered in ketchup flavored comedy.
This episode contains the same humor and animation style fans have grown to adore about the series. This particular adventure’s only flaw is “being the adventure after the Lich episode,” meaning it will inevitably disappoint some fans who were expecting another two-part story. Fans should not be quick to criticize, though, as this episode reminds us why we watch Adventure Time in the first place.
And no, it’s not just because of Lumpy Space Princess. Fans of Adventure Time watch the show because it shows a genuine friendship between Finn and Jake. It also reminds people of the childhood innocence of finding adventures in random places. Adventure Time also brings out the dark nature of childhood with moments like the Huggaboopies showing their fangs. Adventure Time reminds us why animation is fun and it is continuing to do so with “Conquest of Cuteness.” It makes me wish Huggaboopies would show up at my house. Well, as long as they could make it to my house without being eaten by my dog.
