Finn and Jake square off with a kingdom of candy zombies.
In the world of Adventure Time, candy zombies are viewed nothing more as a common inconvenience that science wiz Princess Bubblegum can dispel. But what happens when the kingdom’s smartest scientist is turned into a zombie herself? Finn and Jake must come to the rescue. Yeah, the kingdom is screwed. Adventure Time continues to provide creative animation and entertaining adventure in this zombie-abundant episode.
Lumpy Space Princess (LSP,) Lady Rainicorn, Finn and Jake are chased by zombies straight into Princess Bubblegum’s laboratory. There, they learn Princess Bubblegum created the candy-zombie apocalypse (again.) Before she can explain the formula, she is bitten and turned into a rotting bubblegum zombie. Now our four heroes must use trial and error to figure out the cure for the apocalypse.
It’s kinda sad that a 15-minute segment of a kid’s show is more satisfying than an entire Resident Evil movie. Adventure Time uses its simple structure and plot devices to craft a zombie bash that makes me want to watch Shaun of the Dead all over again. “From Bad to Worse’s” sense of whimsy is offset by its body count. LSP, Princess Bubblegum, Rainicorn and Jake all become zombies and it enhances the dilemma Finn must go through. Adventure Time even with its phobia of consequences still manages to raise the stakes of its characters in any given episode. Finn is forced to into a corner when trying to figure out what a candy-corn rat has to do with the princess’ formula. Well, maybe it does do the formula. As in, the rat was the real scientist all along. Yes, a rat made of candy corn saves the day. I’m not crapping you when I write that. Only in the land of Oo would a rat save the day (and get a medal for it.)
This episode also delivers in the humor department. Jake’s power allows him to creatively evade infection by elongating his poisoned limb away from the rest of his body. LSP delivers some more lumpy snark while being devoured by zombies in the name of vanity. This episode will satisfy that imaginary 12-year-old you hear screaming in your mind and also your sweet tooth. Just don’t let your craving make you eat zombie-infected candy.
