Introducing Me-Mow the kitty assassin.
You know your show is well off when you can risk positioning a fan-made character into your series. Such is the case with Me-Mow. This week’s episode is not only a testament to clever writing but also to the show’s blossoming popularity among young people. Finn and Jake meet a new adversary that – unlike Ice King – is actually a challenge.
Finn and Jake enjoy a pie with Wildberry Princess until she informs them that an assassin plans to wipe her out. Finn and Jake eat it off as usual until Jake notices a tiny cat in his pie. Enter Me-Mow: assassin in training. Me-Mow infiltrates Jake’s nose and poisons him. The miniature then delivers an ultimatum: Kill the princess or suffer from more poison. The dilemma in this episode is inventive and doesn’t shy away from the word “kill” or “poison.”
The conflict between Jake’s love for his friends and his life is presented with a fair amount of tension for a children’s show. The characterization of the two is handled expertly. Jake never compromises himself to killing to save himself. He puts Finn above himself and would rather be poisoned than see his friend hurt by the assassin. On that note, seeing Finn sing their mom’s lullaby to Jake is a wonderfully intimate moment between friends despite Jake having an assassin in his nose.
It helps that Me-Mow is a fully realized villain – or villainess? Whatever the gender of this gore-kitten, he/she is a delightful treat indeed. Unlike other cartoon characters like Plankton, whose size is a detriment, Me-Mow uses his/her abilities to strike Finn from below. Me-Mow doesn’t play games. Don’t believe me? Just look at that unusual mouth he/she has. What’s remarkable is that a fan designed this character. Let’s hope that kid has a future in animation.
