Finn and Jake lock themselves in Marceline’s closet – it’s not what you think.
Finn and Jake break one of the cardinal rules of being friends with a vampire princess: never go into her house uninvited.
What does our dynamic duo do when they enter her house uninvited? They hide in a closet. This seems anti climatic, but some interesting character dynamics come into play. In all of their efforts to avoid Marceline, we see that Finn and Jake are more afraid of her than anything else they have experienced (outside of a dead Princess Bubblegum, that is).
Finn and Jake had planned to meet up with Marceline at her house. After reading her note that explains how she doesn’t want them inside the house yet, the two decide to play a game of hide-and-seek. At this point, you know where this is going. The two entrap themselves in Marceline’s closet by the time she returns meaning the two must now somehow sneak out.
From a production perspective, this episode is a small marvel. The development team still animate Finn and Jake despite their self-induced activity. The two avoid a violent spider and Jake continues to morph into things you cannot un-see. While the duo are freaking out, Marceline just continues with her evening by singing. Marceline’s events are more subtle and offer further insight into her character. She even speaks about having no friends, which makes Finn freak out. I would tend to think this is Marceline’s average emo reaction though. What makes the situation more interesting is when Finn sneaks into her bathroom and sees a naked Marceline (unbeknownst to her.) It’s ironic, considering how Finn fancies Princess Bubblegum.
The twist at the end of the story deflates the anxiety expressed by our heroes. Turns out Marceline hides in their house all the time. Karma has been served on a bloody platter. Our final scene shows Finn in a paranoid state. He is worried about a wooing he hears outside of his tree house. Don’t worry, it’s just your friendly neighborhood Marceline just trying to scare the algebra out of you.
